Overview

Students in Gan (kindergarten), Kitah Aleph (1st grade), and Kitah Bet (2nd grade) attend the SCJLL once a week. Families may choose either Tuesdays, 4:00 – 6:15pm or Wednesdays, 4:00 – 6:15pm. Through hands-on experiences and inquiry-based activities, children get their first formal exposure to Hebrew, Jewish values, prayer, holidays, Torah stories, and Israel. It all takes place within the context of our warm and inviting Temple Aliyah community.

Jonah and the WhaleGan (Kindergarten)

The theme of the Gan (Kindergarten) year, “My Jewish Me,” is designed to set the tone for a child’s Jewish educational journey.  Our tradition teaches that learning should be sweet, and our experienced kindergarten teachers accomplish this goal by creating an atmosphere that is exciting, fun, and inviting of curious exploration.

Our Gan students and their families are invited to join us for two special Kindergarten programs over the course of the year:

  • Gan Family Program – A fun Sunday morning here at the SCJLL to help families connect to each other and prepare for an upcoming holiday. The morning includes a light brunch, storytelling, arts & crafts and more!
  • Kippah Ceremony – This ceremony celebrates the achievements and growth of our Gan (Kindergarten) students over the course of their first year at the SCJLL. In honor of this milestone, all children receive their own kippah to use throughout their years here at Temple Aliyah.

Kitah Aleph (1st Grade) & Kitah Bet (2nd Grade)

IMG_0186In first and second grades, our focus is on inviting students into the exciting and vibrant world of Jewish learning. In first grade, we focus on learning the basic stories of the Torah and the Jewish tradition. In second grade, we experience and celebrate each of the Jewish holidays and their rituals as well as Jewish symbols and objects.  These two grades also serve as the foundation for Hebrew learning.  First graders learn to recognize Hebrew letters, and second graders begin to put letters together with vowels to form short monosyllabic words.

Our Kitah Aleph (1st Grade) students and their families are invited to join us for two special programs over the course of the year:

  • Kitah Aleph Family Program – A fun Sunday morning here at the SCJLL to help families connect to each other and to learn about the importance of the Shema prayer. The morning includes a light brunch, storytelling, arts & crafts and more!
  • Naming Ceremony – This ceremony celebrates our Kitah Aleph student’s family legacy and history. Our students are presented with their Hebrew name.

Our Kitah Bet (2nd Grade) students and their families are invited to join us for one special program over the course of the year:

  • Kitah Bet Family Program – A fun Sunday morning here at the SCJLL to help families connect to each other and to create a beautiful challah cover for their Shabbat table. The morning includes a light brunch, storytelling, arts & crafts and more!
