Video Recap and Texts

  • Before your Erev Yom Kippur meal, Kapparot may be performed using money in a small sack, which will then be donated to tzedakah.  The words to recite during the kapparot ceremony are found below.  You may also click here to download a printable PDF.
  • Your Erev Yom Kippur meal should be festive and include two salted meat dishes.  Rather than trying to make the fast easier, the Rabbis wanted to make it more intense and therefore meaningful.
  • The Erev Yom Kippur meal does NOT include a kiddush.
  • Do not light candles until after the meal!  The holiday (and fast) begin as soon as you light the candles, so wait until you’ve completed the meal, then light the Yizkor candle (and recite the “lighting a memorial candle” text below) followed by the holiday candles, and recite the blessing:
    Bo-ruch a-toh Ado-noi E-lo-hei-nu me-lech ho-olom a-sher ki-de-sha-nu be-mitz-vo-tov ve-tzi-vo-nu le-had-lik ner shel Yom Ha-kipurim.
